Stanton & Killeen has a rich history in Rutherglen, Victoria and is one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries. Celebrating 145 years of family winemaking in 2020, CEO Wendy Killeen (1962) and her daughter Natasha Killeen continue as custodians of some very precious wine parcels, the oldest fortifieds dating back to the early 1960s.
Chris Killeen (who sadly passed in 2007) had a passion for Portuguese Port and endeavored to create his own unique Australian style. He planted several Portuguese grape varieties in the 1990s including Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cão. He moved away from the traditional, sweet Australian style of Port and was one of the first to produce this new style by blending the Portuguese varieties with Shiraz and Durif, creating a very savory and age-worthy fortified wine.
Fortifieds are a strong focus for the winery with around half of its production dedicated to this style. Over the last 5 years plus their Muscats and Topaques have taken out the Trophy and Gold Medals at the Boutique Wine Awards, Victorian Wine Shows and International Wine & Spirits Competition, to name a few.
Testament to their history as part of the community, Stanton & Killeen offers customers the opportunity to buy their own barrels and develop their own blend at home with provided base material. Such is their love of and commitment to bringing Fortified wine to the Australian community.
